People want both resources to be shared and a place to store their
individual items only they are interested in and want to keep. Also
sometimes processing in a system is shared between the shared system and
the individual computer.
You are thinking too linear. Too restricive of a system just limits our
creative spirit. Also the more the shared resources do, the more
powerful both they and the network have to be to keep up.
