Paul,
The Java runtime within Oracle 10g is compatible with JDK 1.4; expect a
compatibility with JDK 1.5+ in upcoming major database releases.
Check out my soon-to-be-released book about Java in Oracle database
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1555583296/
It has been written primarly for DBAs such as yourself; it has lot of
ready to use code samples and here is the sample chapter
http://www.oracle.com/technology/books/pdfs/mensah_ch1.pdf.
