Distribued and Centralized environments are simple terms. Nowadays we use
terms like Thin Client and distriguted computing (some).
There are some people using thin clients where most of the functionality
and
the applications are on the server/s, and even the word processing is
loaded
at the time it is needed. Do a search for "Thin Client" on an Internet
Search Engine. Thin clients require very robust networks because there is
so much data being accessed just to load the software. Even the the
client
sotware may be loaded off a network boot server.
If the users and departments have any influence, I think most of them will
opt for every user having their own fully functional PC. This gives users
and departments more flexibility.
Many systems are built with several layers:
Client - Users and Outside Interfaces???
Network system (between all layers) -
(Internet -Email -Voicemail- fax server - IP phones)
Application and/or Re****t Servers/3rd party applications
SQL Server
Database Server
There is much more to modern computer systems.
