I've been working with btrieve for 10 years (ie not long by the
standards of some people here!) and I've NEVER come across a free
program that allows you to read btrieve files direct. I know of
no free program that takes the binary btrieve file and provides
access to it via the Btreive API.

There are two formats to consider. The first is how btrieve organises
the internals of a file to manage record storage, index management,
compression etc. This is what the licensed Btrieve software does.
The second is how a particular application choses to store data
in a record.

As a format, it's always been internal to the btrieve data server.
