Re: Force creation of related records?

by Scott Trotter <scotttro@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jun 25, 2008 at 08:34 AM

Grip, iacon: thanks guys, I appreciate the help. This thing has been a
complex and rather frustrating learning experience for me - my previous
experience with Filemaker was v3, so tables and whatnot are entirely new
to me.

As a follow-up, what I ended up doing was using QuickKeys to create 40
related Chapter tables in a star configuration around the Class table,
with the "create related records" option turned on in the link. Took
about an hour after setting up the macro. There's a series of 40 ****tals
in the Class layout displaying those fields. This way, the "empty" data
fields are visible to the teacher without having to create the records
until data is actually entered into each ****tal.

I expect none of the staff will end up using all 40 chapters for a
year's worth of data - that's about a chapter a week, which (in my
class, at least) is *way* more than I use. I will, however, need to
"sell" some of the staff on the usefulness of this thing, so a little
overkill might be useful.

Now I'm off to the "analysis" and "monitoring" tools - the stuff I think
are the most fun.

Thanks again!
