Geeked out by RAC?

Uhm... maybe I would, if XPS didn't exist. or should I say did exist?

Sorry, my point is that while the lab is doing great things to the product
=
and it shows that the product isn't dead yet, the other side of the house
i=
sn't doing anything to promote the product.

What's the point about getting jazzed about a feature that is now being
vie=
wed as "RAC" (an Oracle feature that they released *years* ago)?=20
Sorry if I'm grounded in reality as to the perception of the marketplace.
=
What is a decent feature will be spun as "playing catch up to Oracle".

The problem is this... The IDS market is growing in spite of IBM. Its not
=
a question of "what *I* think of as best" but what is common sense.

Sort of like Hamburger Hill in Viet Nam. US sends Army troops to take a
hil=
l, and then after a blood bath, they retreat and give it back to the
enemy.

There are cost effective things that IBM could do to promote IDS and get
go=
od PR. Only IBM doesn't want to spend the $$$. Now if this were DB2?..

just meant that I was pretty geeked out about "RAC" on Informix. I would
=
assume that most other Informixers would be too. But instead of being
geeke=
d out about it you proceed to tell everyone what's wrong with the world.
Yo=
u cannot be pleased by IBM, they won't do what you think is best. Maybe a
s=
ad reality but a reality nonetheless.

When someone gives you a bowl of soup, do you say thank you and eat it or
c=
omplain because it wasn't marketed well enough, or enough effort was not
pu=
t into pouring it into the bowl?

I'll say no more because I don't want to contribute to the demise of this
t=
hread.

Happy Informixing.

All the fun?

Naw. It must be that you have a boring life that you consider this *fun*.
When you get to blow something up, then you're having fun.

IDS isn't fun, its business.=20

The issue is that you have a very *viable* platform and its slowly getting
=
killed because of the business side of the shop.

You want fun, then lets talk about embedding an open source math library
in=
 the engine.

You want fun, set up an HACMP set of servers, pull the plug on your main
se=
rver forcing a crash, and then wait 5 minutes before putting the cord back
=
in, and then rebooting. Time how long it takes to fully recover. (That's
fu=
n, right?)

suck all the fun out of this forum.

Maybe you just need to get laid. Smile a little, you'll like it.

That was never in question since Janet left the building.

I think Janet left the building because IDS in the LUW (why I included
wind=
ows I don't know...) space is the best performer.

What was in question is when would the marketing/sales/higher ups grok
what=
they had and started to push it to the public.

The reason I griped about IBM wasn't the techies in the lab. (Including
Ser=
ge and the guys in Markham.) It was the fact that Databases were being
trea=
ted as a commodity and IDS was being shoved to the side as IBM flogged DB2
=
to the m*****. Even in white papers publi****ng cute "hacks" by Martie
Lauri=
e on an IDS project have to mention DB2...=20

You want to go head to head against Postgress and Oracle, IDS will crush
th=
em in terms of
performance and ease of use. (Not to mention TCO)

But the "wins" and "customer success stories" aren't coming from IBM, but
t=
he Ron Flannery(s) and Bell Micro(s) of the world. (And I know Paul and
Stu=
art are going to slam me for not mentioning their companies.)

The extensability is an under appreciated and under used feature because
th=
e sales teams don't understand it and the competition doesn't offer it.

So why hasn't IBM capitalized on this? Why don't they offer research
grants=
? Why haven't they cross pollinated their "boffins" in NY to take
advantage=
 of it?
I know Jerry K can't be everywhere, but where is his sup****t from the
sales=
side? (This is why you have BDMs.)

But hey! What do I know? ;-)
