I can't enumerate the number of times when a well-placed "sleep(10)" call
has made a host of strange problems magically disappear ... even in Win32.

A great many things in the Paradox world (or in the world of /any/ such
application) happen in response to the stream of "Windows messages" that
exist outside of, and beyond the direct control of, your
application.  "Little old sleep()" causes the Windows message queue to be
emptied, and by specifying an insignificant number of milliseconds' delay,
we assure that the Paradox process gets re-dispatched.

What this does for you is... it eliminates a whole lot of
the /variability/ .  Hence, a lot of the head-ba****ng guesswork.
