This was my second year attending DEVCON, the first year after
finalizing my choice of Cache' for a specific software project. Once
again, I had a great conference experience. As much as I love the
Spectrum crowd (I mentioned once that middle-aged men were my target
demographic ;-) and miss the U2 folks, I really like the better mix of
young and old, male and female, mumpsters and pickies, combined with a
company that is looking to the future with a product that is excellent
today.
In addition to meeting a lot of fun, I mean smart, people (such as at
dinner with > 40 MV folks, both customers and also MV developers
within InterSystems), some of the highlights for me:
1) Seeing their failover, failback solution. Very cool. InterSystems
majors in the -ilities (scalability, reliability, ...) the things you
just don't seem to get out of the box with other db vendors, including
M$.
2) Seeing what other customers have done with their AJAX framework
(aka Zen), the platform with which we are getting off the ground,
while others are flying fast. I hope we can join that latter category
soon enough.
3) "Executive sessions" on marketing software lead by an industry
expert
4) The introductory sessions from the President and VPs of
InterSystems, indicating their philosophies and priorities
Some of the sessions have ppts and even mp3s available for download
from their web site (email me offline if you cannot find them dwolt at
tincat-group dot com)
Next year I'm hopeful that DEVCON will not be timed to be concurrent
with Spectrum so that more of the MV 3rd parties and MV consultants
will participate. It is a vibrant conference with a vibrant community
of developers -- just what the MV space can use at this point, IMHO.
Cheers! --dawn
