My experience is different .... and more current, but first, remember
that "VME" is a made up word that only came into existence with D3/
NT!!! Prior to this, I can find no reference to VME.

Now, as to the "fantastic" FSI ... today I had need to increase the
size of the VME on a D3/NT site. Simple?!?! Of course not, this is !&*@[EMAIL PROTECTED]
 D3/NT, so

Into the device manager, increase size of the VME from 256Mb to 400Mb,
shutdown D3, restart d3, and .....

Can not open open Users file in FSI:DM .... actually I can not even
access the fsi:dm account anymore .... systems helpfully tells me that
it cannot get a binding handle

Tried to do a an account-restore fsi:dm (o but no joy.

So, my only answer is to hope like hell that I can restore entire
system from previous nights backup, then overwrite the data accounts
with the data I'm currently backing up.

The difference in my experience is that windows HASto be sup****table
because things break (especially with D3 in the mix!!), whereas over
many yhears Linux has proven to be rock solid & not require sup****t!
(In Antartica, where they DO have Linux systems, or in my own
backyard!! If you can call a 2 hour drive in the morning to be onsite
@[EMAIL PROTECTED]
 5am in my backyard)

As to rolling your own Kernel, never done it - never need to. Have
always just installed a bog standard RH distribution. And drivers
aren't an issue, because the Linux box just has memory, hard disk &
some network cards ... and I'm happy to use Windows printers via
Samba, and likewise devices like scanners we drive from windows
clients.

Please note that I am not saying that "windows is bad" - far from it!
Rather, I'm saying that in my experience, D3 running on a windows
platform is far from a marriage made in heaven. Years ago I was aware
of a reasonable number of quite large D3/NT sites (>200 users) ... I'm
not aware of any these days, but DO know that there are some sites
running UV on Windows sup****ting >300 users that bare happy!

However, there are large sites happily running D3/Linux (and AIX) ...
not rocket science to figure out the difference
