Hi Ross
The point is that the FSI was fine after the crash. How the crash
happened
was not really an issue, it could just as easily have been a twister in
Virginia (see last weeks news). When a machine goes down anything in the
VME is lost and requires a major restore and reentry whereas the FSI is
still just poodling along with nary a worry in the world. Maybe the last
entry could be damaged , well we have standard operator run procedures to
check and fix that.
I am actually glad that the misadventure occurred as it reminded me of the
hassles through the '90s that vanished with the arrival of NT and then the
FSI which has saved me heaps of aggravation. I will look more closely at
the code to see what it is that you feel is a major issue, but I will only
run it after a file-save :-) So the sooner the FSI replaces the Linux VME
then the sooner I will look at Linux, maybe :-)
I cannot agree that getting the correct driver for a strange white box is
the same as rolling a new kernel since Windows happily looks for it and
loads it automatically whereas any one else trying to look after the Linux
box would be in trouble. This of course begs the question of why buy a
strange white box in the first place when Dell, Hp, Lenovo, Acer, Asus etc
all sell properly setup boxes on line.

Tony,
Following other pieces of this thread, I don't think adding a driver
would be a good idea - sort of like making changes to the Linux
Kernel ;-)
Also, just for the record, I have some "intimate" knowledege of the
VME crash that Peter had last week. It came about because of poor
do***entation on my part --> I had given him a copy of our THRASH
account to stress test his beloved FSI, but also (or im****tantly) to
highlight the problems D3/NT has with the OSFI
--> problem is that I took the account off our D3/Linux box, and when
Peter loaded it, it went to the VME rather than the FSI (because D3/
Linux isn't aware of the "funny tricks" D3/NT has in terms of 2
different filing systems), so when the test programs ran, they filled
the VME up rather quickly ...
