I don't know those platforms, but in Java you can get a return value from
an 
arbitrary command, not just queries, if they return a ResultSet.  In this
case 
the JDBC driver should bring back a one-row, one-column result set.

If your environment doesn't have something similar, you should be able to 
select currval() as others have suggested, using a standard query from
your 
platform.
